Plymouth students raise money for charity

Varsity cheque presentation

	<bodycontent>

	Students from rival universities went head-to-head to raise thousands of pounds in charity cash.
	The annual varsity event run by Plymouth University and the University of St Mark and St John raised £12,474.

	The sporting event involved 300 students from each institution competing in a range of sports.
	The main fundraising came from matches held at Plymouth Albion RFC and Plymouth Argyle FC where thousands of tickets were sold.

	Dave De-Beger, vice president (sports) at Plymouth University students' union, said: "It has been a privilege to work with so many students, competing and non-competing, not just to raise money but also awareness of some great charities with local connections.
	"Alongside this we got to see some outstanding performances from both institutions and I was proud to be part of the event."

	This year the money will go to the Chestnut Appeal and the Motor Neurone Disease Association in support of the Simon Adams Trust.

	Charlie Smith, deputy president of Marjon Students' Union, said: "Although the overall result was disappointing, Marjon excelled in many of its specialist sports.
	"With a great result for the Marjon swim team, along with both the male and female football teams.
	"Varsity is a special sporting event that gives both institutions the opportunity to showcase their sporting talents while raising money for charities that are chosen by the universities."

	The presentation of the cheques took place earlier this week.
	Lesley-Ann Simpson, Chestnut Appeal director, said: "A massive thank you to Plymouth University and to Marjon for raising a staggering £6,237 for the charity during varsity week.
	"This fantastic amount will go towards funding our brand new chestnut prostate cancer nurse.
	"What a wonderful achievement, and to raise this amount of money is very welcomed by the Chestnut Appeal.
	"Thank you so much for all your support, it means a great deal to us."

	Plymouth University won the overall event in February by beating University Marjon 30 points to 16.
	The annual event has grown over the last eight years and has now raised almost £100,000 for charity.

Why be an adventure leader?

	<bodycontent>

 Why be an adventure leader?

 - You gain a Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification (employers highly regard CIM qualifications, not like having a Duke of Edinburgh award!) this is a serious perk.
 - Obviously leading a team of students shows extensive leadership and management skills that not many students your age will have the opportunity to gain, really setting you apart from the crowd CV wise.
 - You’ll be responsible for raising £53,000 for charity – think of the impact you would have on so many lives, something to be really proud of.
 - Up to 80% off your fundraising target (if you get a full team of 20) ... not bad
 What you have to do

 - It’s a voluntary position for 1 year
 - Recruitment phase in September/October, responsible for getting as many people attending the information meeting as possible and converting those to registrations.
 - Fundraising support phase, you have a reduced target because you are supposed to be organising events to help your team hit their targets and have bi-weekly meetings & socials for team bonding.
 - On the adventure you are the main contact between student adventures and your team (don’t worry you don’t do the leading up the mountain yourself).
 - Working closely with RAG and your charity to keep us in the loop of your progress.

 There will be staff support from UPSU all year round, also you get to go on the adventure leader training weekend, which I’ve heard is an experience in itself.
 You want to leave University with more than just memories of the library and getting trollied in Oceana.
 Go to studentadventures . co . uk

 Yeah so if you have any more question
 please email ragplymouth@su.plymouth.ac.uk

Increase in student burglaries, protect yourself.

There has been a recent spike in opportunistic burglaries in the Greenbank, Mutley, Greenbank and Lipson areas of Plymouth.

 Increase in student burglaries, protect yourself.

 PCSO Sarah Pengelly is making you aware of a recent spike in opportunistic burglaries in the Greenbank, Mutley, Greenbank and Lipson areas of Plymouth. The method of entry for the majority of these burglaries have been through open doors and open windows. The most favoured items which tend to be stolen within these burglaries are laptops, Ipads, games consoles and any other small concealable items. Unfortunately the majority of these victims are most likely to be students or individuals living in a multiple occupancy property. Don’t let the burglar in by following the simple tips below:

 >> Keep all doors and windows shut and locked, don’t just rely on your house mate to do it!

 >> Make sure all valuables are out of view from opportunist thieves.

 >> If you have a burglar alarm, make sure it is activated before leaving your home.

 >> Property mark your valuables using a UV pen and also record any serial numbers on www.immobilise.com

Swim The Sound

On Sunday 18th August 2013, the Chestnut Appeal, is holding a sponsored swim from the Plymouth Breakwater to Plymouth Hoe.

	<bodycontent>

	This two and a half mile swim is not to be missed and Chestnut Appeal hope to have 150 swimmers taking part on the day and apparently there is a proper little community festival vibe around it, which receives a fair bit of attention.

	Registration for the swim is £35 which will help cover the cost of the on water safety team, and we ask that swimmers raise at least £50 for the Chestnut Appeal. If you think you might be able to get a small team together (or if you want to enter as an individual) please drop alex.bordoli@su.plymouth.ac.uk an email to register interest.

	On Wednesday 24th April the Chestnut Appeal will then be coming in on the 11:30 AM-2 PM so you can register and ask any questions about the swim. Find them in the Hive!

Ask the Sabbs Blackboard

The Sabb team have recently erected a blackboard in the coffee shop titled ‘Ask the Sabbs’

	<bodycontent>

 Ask the Sabbs Blackboard

 The Sabb team have recently erected a blackboard in the coffee shop titled ‘Ask the Sabbs’. The intension of the blackboard is to give you the opportunity to do just this and put forward any question they wish to ask not only the sabbatical officers but the students' union as a whole. We are hoping this will enhance the interaction between the union and our members, giving all of our student demographics the forum to ask maybe things they feel are too trivial to actively seek someone out or equally not knowing the appropriate channels to go down and therefore the correct personal for the specific answer.

 The blackboard has been located in the coffee shop mainly due to it being an alcohol free zone, but also while people are waiting in the queue it is the perfect opportunity for them to quickly put forward something that may have been bugging them. The coffee shop also paints the fairest picture of student diversity as far as UPSU involvement with it often entertaining various nationalities as well as groups of post grad and mature students. These are particular demographics which we struggle to currently engage and hopefully this will encourage them to question us on aspect they feel are lacking.

 The overall goal is for us as a students' union to further understand the wants of our members (you guys) and also increase that level of interaction which students often feel is not there. At the end of each week, as a sabbatical team we will release a video on to the union website of the sabbatical team answering these questions as a team. During this year we have also received feedback that students never see the sabbs as a team but as individuals so hopefully this weekly video will begin to address this perception also.

 So please do take a minute of your time to tell us something you want to see or question your student union on quite literally anything and help us provide a better service for you!

UPSU Best Bar None Gold Award winners 2013

We are proud to announce that we are Best Bar None Gold Award winners

	<bodycontent>

 UPSU Best Bar None Gold Award winners 2013

 We are proud to announce that UPSU has received a Gold Award in the Best Bar None Awards for Students’ Unions held at the NUS Services AGM and Convention in Manchester on Wednesday.

 Best Bar None is a national awards’ scheme which recognises best practice in licensed trade. UPSU competes against some 80 other students’ unions from around the UK. Unions’ operating policies and procedures are rigorously assessed against criteria such as public and event safety, prevention of crime and disorder, staff training, consideration for the local community and the responsible retailing of alcohol. The assessment process involves both the submission of written records and an unannounced on-site assessment by an independent assessor.

 This year the scheme became even more stringent with the introduction of 36 additional criteria.
 Only 7 of the 80 entrants achieved the gold standard award.

 UPSU has been recognised for delivering outstanding licenced trade services alongside Derby, Hull, Liverpool, Keele, Chichester and Winchester. Congratulations to our fellow Gold Award winners!

 UPSU’s success at the Best Bar None Awards 2013 is testament to our commitment to delivering excellence to our members and recognises the incredible work of our venue staff who work tirelessly to ensure our customers experience the highest standards of customer service, safety and care whilst enjoying their social time at UPSU.

 Our congratulations and thanks to the entire UPSU venue team who have made this fantastic achievement possible. Well done to them all!
