Hello, my name is Mitch Laughton, and I am running to become your new VP Activities. I have an undeniable passion for sport, societies and volunteering as well as helping others and I believe in positivity and equality within both of these.

For three years now I have been part of the men’s football team, in which, I have been on the committee twice. Being 2nd team captain and social media sec have allowed me to develop my leadership skills whilst giving me a release. Something like sport can help enhance your university experience which is why it’s so important.

If elected I would target:

  • Mental Health- I aim to drastically improve mental health support by providing relevant training within sports and societies for all committee members, in turn creating a large number of mental health advocates. I also aim to raise awareness surrounding current buddy schemes ensuring students don’t feel alone, along with increased sign posting and communication across all sports, societies and volunteering groups.

  • Developing a ‘family’ feel- I am looking to create a more inter-connected feel across all sports, societies and clubs by increasing support at club matches and society events. To create a real #TeamPlymouth atmosphere I will redevelop the TeamPlymouth Social Media to involve all achievements, fixtures and events from all affiliated with the SU to create a unique family bond.

  • Breaking down barriers to participation- I aim to develop the culture of participation in sports, societies and clubs, by setting a foundation to raise awareness of a social level of involvement especially for women. I also aim to break down the barriers to participation that the pandemic has created for all students, ensuring that everyone has the best opportunity to find their home in a society that suits them.
