► Ed Marshall

Hi there! for those of you don’t know me, my name’s Ed. I’m currently Vice President Education and Welfare and I have decided to re-run for 2010. I’ve put together a manifesto which provides real focus on all students, a campaigning culture and a leadership of academic representation.

I want to focus on what students think is important. Below I have written a bit about myself and my manifesto; but I think it is crucial I hear from you, on what you would like to see from UPSU. Drop me an email, give me a call, send me a facebook message. Either broad comments about UPSU, or the ideas I've put forward.

f: RE-ELECT ED #1 for VP Education & Welfare

So, when I was elected in 2009, it was on a manifesto dedicated to fighting for students - working to defend and extend our rights and opportunities - on both our Education and Welfare.

I have spearheaded campaigns on the funding of Higher Education, fighting rises in the tuition fee cap and working to ensure that education remains affordable. With colleagues, we led a successful 'Town Takeover' campaign on funding and were recognised by the National Union of Students for this.

The way that the University approaches feedback and assessment is being changed and restructured after continued behind the scenes pressure; in Course Rep Network Meetings students spoke out loudly and clearly about the problems with bad feedback. Now begins the long and slow process of getting a new system pushed through the various different University committees - a battle we are sure to win.

This is only a small selection of what I have been fighting for and have achieved this year. I've developed more and better positive relationships with the University than any previous VP Education and Welfare; at the same time I've been holding the University to account when they're not student-focused; I've elected more Student Reps than ever and provided training and resources so you, the student increasingly can demand your academic needs are met.

In addition to developing on the above, I am passionately committed to ensuring we represent our entire membership. A large majority of our members are either medical students, mature and part time, students of faith and none, work based learners, or student parents; and these can no longer be left sidelined- the Student Union needs to diversify to meet these students needs and I want to ensure that happens next year.

Over the past year I have achieved real gains; although to really deliver I need a second term to continue to further some of the things I have started.
