Partner College Rugby Varsity – Bicton v South Devon 36-14 Wednesday 27th April saw Bicton host the first partner college rugby varsity match as part of UPSU’s partner college varsity fortnight, which has already seen City College beat Duchy at futsal. The idea of this event is to give those 12,000 Plymouth University students who study at our many partner colleges the opportunity to get involved with sport as well as getting a taste of that competitive varsity atmosphere that we love here on the main campus.

Partner College Futsal Varsity – City College vs Duchy 8-5 On Wednesday the 20th of April, Plymouth University was host to the first ever partner college varsity event, a gruelling futsal match between two of our close by colleges, City College and Duchy College. One defining feature in this match was the verocity and competitive spirit of each captain, leading team talks on the pitch that left those watching trembling with angst. The match kicked off and began nervously with few sequences of passing and it looked to be a scrappy affair. City College were just about edging it as Mike of Duchy picked up the ball on the halfway line and battled through 3 players to strike first blood. 1-0 Duchy. The tide then dramatically turned. City College found their rythm and scored 5 goals in quick succession, effectively using width to capatilise on Duchy's unorganised and inexperienced system. At 5-1 down, things were looking bleak. Some clever tactical changes and some strengthening in defense saw Duchy come back into the game, scoring 2 well worked goals to make it 5-3. A couple great strikes, one from each captain, put the scores at 6-4 at half time. The second half saw some much better passing from each team, and two organised systems kept the goals down to a minimum, City College managing the solitary goal in a hard fought 18 minutes. With 2 minutes left, Duchy brought the score to 7-5. There was belief. Could they complete the mother of all come backs? The answer was no. City College sealed their dominance with one more goal and the first Partner College Varsity fixture was done. Both teams fought valiantly, and a big congratulations must go to Alex Buss and his City College team, the first champions of many. |
