Afro Caribbean

Chair: Jesse Appiah

The ACS consists of a committee who are willing to promote and educate you on the rich Afro-Caribbean heritage, while also incorporating other backgrounds and races through various events, socials and talks (not a lot of them, so don't think of us as an extra course).
We aim to grant you an enjoyable uni experience while you are part of the ACS. We would also like to help you to create new friendships and networks through the common interest in the African Caribbean Culture.

Amateur Dramatics

Chair: Anastasia Anaxagorou 

The University of Plymouth Amateur Dramatics run acting workshops, improvisation sessions and put on shows ranging from Shakespeare to plays written and directed by our own members. We offer the chance to actors and actresses to develop their skills and be part of great productions, as well as giving people a way to work on their confidence. We put on one showcase and also one big show during the course of the year. We also run writing workshops for those who wish to practice their play-writing. We meet every Tuesday in Babbage 411 and it's only £5 to join for the whole year so come along to have some fun and meet some great people

Amnesty International

Chair: Thomas O’Neill

We campaign on human rights issues across the world. Our activities include socials, letter writing, film evenings, talks with our local MP, bake sales (or Amnes-Teas) and gigs. Also look out for events on Human Rights Day and our Christmas Greeting Card Campaign amongst other campaigns!

In November there is a trip to London to the Amnesty International Student Conference which hosts talks and seminars from leading journalists and human rights activists.
Despite the harsh messages we deal with we like to keep things sociable and uplifting, having as much fun as possible along the way. Membership fee is £4.

Asian

A society that celebrates Asian culture by providing information, organise activities and events of asian heritage through social, sporting, educational and cultural means/events for all Plymouth university students. This will include an annual Bollywood/Bhangra ball as well as regular bhangra nights including a night out in Bristol, weekly cricket nets, monthly tea parties with varying Asian treats, Shisha evenings and also events to celebrate Asian holidays such as the Chinese New Year, Eid and Diwali. We also hope to have more general activities where memebers can get to know each other outside of an academic environment, these include paintballing and go karting. Membership is during freshers week £10 and standard £15.

This society was set up in 2005 by a dedicated bunch of students who wanted a musical outlet within the university in which to play Jazz. The band has gone from strength to strength since this time and now boosts over 30 committed members; playing gigs across Plymouth and the surrounding area.

We are a friendly lot and welcome any age and ability within the university.... We regularly play gigs within the academic year and have an active social life as well.

We get together and rehearse every Monday in the Rolle building at 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Membership is £10.

Biomedical Sciences Society (Biomed-Soc)

Biomed-Soc is for those studying a biological/medical degree, or anyone has an interest in the subject. Whave regular meetings to discuss topics such as physiology and disease, as well as recent advances in medical research, keeping our members as up to date as possible in the subject area, going beyond the limits of what is taught in lectures alone.

Choir

We are a mixed abilities choir and we welcome any person who has even the slightest interest in singing, we have regular rehearsals (6:30pm every Wednesday with drinks afterwards in the Brass Monkey) and have socials once a month on a thursday. We perform termly, in march we raised over £2500 for CLIC Sargent with our concert "Music for Megan". We already have two concerts planned for December including one at St. Andrews Church, and another at the SU. The choir is a fun and welcoming society and we look forward to seeing you at one of our rehearsals!

Christian Union

The Christian Union is a group of students who aim to demonstrate the love of Jesus to people now! We hand out free Tea, Toast & Pancakes every Friday night with an opportunity to come and chat. We also run free lunchtime bars once a month, where we talk about big questions (titles on website). Look out for us on campus or come along to our weekly meeting on Tuesdays at 7.30pm in Methodist Central Hall (Opposite Drake Circus). It's also a brilliant place to meet more people and ask any questions you may have about the Christian Faith. Membership is £10 however no need to be a member to come to weekly meetings.

Climate Change

For people who are interested in the causes and effects of climate change, and its future implications for our planet, but who are also interested in wider environmental issues in general. We'll be holding talks, film showings, and finding ways to take positive action to prevent a worsening problem. There's also the opportunity to get involved with local and national initiatives that are working to increase recognition of environmental issues, and (of course!) the odd social occasion thrown in. For the bargain price of £2.00!

We are a cohesive community with a shared commitment to the advancement of computer security. The society allows students to be actively engaged in the world of IT security. This is achieved by running a broad series of events, such as workshops, lectures and trips as well as carrying out various research tasks to promote security knowledge.

The society seeks to promote professional practice that in turn can be utilised to meet the demands of businesses. CISS members are provided with the experience, skills and support to utilize and create a foundation required for a future career in IT. Membership is £2.

Hi we are CrimSoc – the criminology and criminal justice society, and we will be providing students with the opportunity to truly experience the course as it should be. The University of Plymouth History Society is a group of individuals who are united together by a love of history and socialising. The society run’s a number of different events during the academic year such as very successful guest speakers, day-trips, good old drinking socials, and future trips to historical sites across Europe. We aim to be involved in a range of activities which are mostly centred upon on historical topics, but we also run socials events such as theme nights to pub quizzes so we not only welcome historical students but also anyone who wants to have fun. The society works closely alongside the academic professors to help provide a mentoring service and drop-in service for university students who may have questions or problems relating to university life. Many of the chair members are also student representatives and ambassador so they are trained to deal with any issues that you may have. We are a society that aims to have fun whilst also learning more about the history. Membership is £3.

We’re HABSoc – The Hot Air Ballooning Society. We are a new Society set up at the end of the 2010/2011 academic year.

We are here for people to get involved in this “different” but awesome activity.

Howard League for Penal Reform

The Howard League for Penal Reform was established in 1866 and is named after John Howard, one of the first prison reformers. It is entirely independent of government and is funded by voluntary donations and membership subscriptions. The Howard League for Penal Reform wants a safe society where fewer people are victims of crime and believes that offenders must make amends for what they have done and change their lives through community sentencing.

As a society we will hold meetings at least once a month and hold events to raise awareness for the society, fundraise for the charity as well as including all the usual social aspects of a society. Membership is £1.

We are a society for all Law and Criminal Justice Students as well as anyone who is interested in a career in law. We run extensive internal and external mooting, negotiation and debating competitions as well as a multitude of career and special events. One such event, our Annual Cheese and Wine Evening, sees the society host an event with many different professionals including Barristers, Solicitors, Probation Workers, the CPS and local Police. Literature Society

We are a friendly group of students who meet up for socials once per week. Most socials have a chilled-out vibe; a place where you can come along and meet like-minded people for chats and drinks. (Of course there will be a few crazier, themed socials where you can blow off some steam!) We will also be running regular literary events such as theatre and cinema trips, film screenings, poetry and short story readings, where you will be able to show off your own work or just come and enjoy others'. Marine Biology Society

The Marine Biology Society is a group of like minded people not only from marine based degree programmes but other programmes too and is open to all University of Plymouth Students.
The group is highly social and has recently forged links with many bars and leisure outlets in and around Plymouth. In addition, the society organises many trips to various sites as well as interesting and informative talks from experts in their field.

We also have close ties to the Marine Biological Association which is one of the UK's leading marine biological research institutes. Through these close ties we are able to offer joint MBS/MBA membership to out student members with many benefits.

Joint MBA/MBS membership is highly recommended and cost just £30 for the year which includes access to the Journal of the Marine Biology Association. Membership to just the UoP MBS is £7 for the year.

Musical Theatre Group

Musical Theatre Group focuses on all theatre aspects – singing, dancing, acting and production. Our society aims to produce one big musical show in March. All the profit we gain from these shows goes towards producing the following years show and we also spend a lot of the year involved in fundraising events so that we can keep getting bigger and better. We also get very involved in the community with schools and local charities. Our rehearsals take place in the Main Hall on university campus at 7pm on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Come along! Plymouth Links ( St John Ambulance)

We are the section of St John Ambulance run and operated by Plymouth Uni Students. Plymouth LINKS is an official UPSU Society which is dedicated to providing first aid to whoever needs it. We supply top quality training, support and equipment to our members so they can confidentially and competently treat persons as First Aiders. We do this at a wide range of events (Sports Events, Rock Concerts, Demonstrations, etc) as well as being involved with: youth work, emergency support, training and fundraising.

150,000 die needlessly each year, when even basic first aid could have saved their life – we find this statistic shocking and that is why we do what we do. This is not just a statistic: Plymouth LINKS members have saved lives, they will continue to do so at events, on the street, wherever and whenever required.

PLUGS

A society for anyone interested in Guiding and Scouting who wish to continue their involvement whilst at University. We go on regular trips including national camps and balls. We help out at both University held events and local Guiding and Scouting events. We can also help people to find a local Guide or Scout Unit if they wish to continue as a leader. We generally meet on a Tuesday and the plan for the new academic year is to alternate these between "unit meetings" where we can act like children, try out some of the new badges etc, and more traditional socials, which usually see us ending up down on the barbican in The Lounge or The Dairy Bar. Membership is £10.

The University of Plymouth Poker Society is one of the largest societies here at Plymouth! With over 150 member and growing, we cater for complete beginners who would like to learn how to play, to keen and experienced players. We play in a very friendly completely relaxed environment, and welcome all students who would like to play! Politics & International Affairs

Plymouth University Politics and International Affairs Society (PIASOC), is not just for Politics students! It is for anyone who takes an interest and who would like to learn more, in fact the diverse range of subjects covered makes the society an excellent supplement to many different courses at Plymouth University. We have had lectures on diverse topics such as the Arab Spring, the U.S Presidential Election, and the role of torture in the global war on terrorism, all delivered by world class experts in their respective fields. Lectures are usually followed by a social in James Street Vaults, always a laugh! In the coming year we hope to compliment the guest lecture programme with some student lead discussions, and a possible trip up to London. Pool

The Pool and Snooker society is a fun and friendly club for those interested in playing these sports. We hold weekly pool nights at Cues Pool club and also hold weekly snooker nights at Plaza Snooker club which both carry cash prizes. Both clubs have a high standard of tables and offer us drink deals on each night. We hold socials every month which involve a pub crawl, pub golf and a special treasure hunt. For those more interested in the serious side of things we take three teams to the BUCS pool nationals which are held every year and is a great experience and a very good laugh where we get to play against universities from all over the country. Don’t be put off if you think you’re not great, come along, improve your skills and have a laugh!

A society ran by final year psychology students and representatives from each stage. The society will run events for socializing, support, charity events and the aim to provide a great experience. UPRACS is a vibrant and highly social society for those who appreciate real ale and cider. We are affiliated to CAMRA and run casual socials every week, as well as frequent trips to breweries and beer festivals. We are proud that we also arrange for members to experience many great establishments around Plymouth and Devon – places you might not otherwise visit. From this year, the society also encompasses brewing after a merger with the brewing society – the society owns its own brewing equipment and will be running a series of how-to lectures on the art/science of brewing. Robo Soc is about robotics, and is open to anyone who has an interest in them. We meet once a week on Wednesdays. Prior to the meeting all members will be sent an email explaining what activity is to take place, its duration and anything else worth mentioning. It is then up to the member to decide if this activity interests them and is worth attending. On that note we have two types of membership, play membership is more based on the build and play mentality and avoids heavy programing and electronics tasks. While work membership covers everything. Play membership £5 and work membership is £10.

Sikh

The Sikh Society has been especially created to unite the Sikh community, also known as Sangat, in Plymouth. Seeing as we are a minority in this region, we intend to raise awareness of Sikh practices, through having discussions and celebrating key dates on the Sikh Calendar such as Vaisakhi . We believe that it is important to keep our religion and culture alive and always remember Waheguru (God). As for events, we will be holding Kirten services and discussions as well as doing Seva by providing Langhar to various charities every month.

TermiSoc is the Plymouth University Computing and Technology Society. We've existed since the early nineties and have traditionally had a membership of computing students. However we welcome everyone, and in the recent years we've had a much more diverse range of students. We host a workspace every Monday, where someone will usually present about various projects and host tutorials about whatever they find interesting. We have our socials on Thursdays where we usually do things like cinema trips, house parties and bad movie nights. We’re just a friendly bunch of geeks, and we hope to see you soon! United Nations

Chair: Abbye Meredith

This is our second year as a society and we’re really excited about what we will be doing this coming year. We as a society are basically involved and interested in everything you would expect the United Nations to be involved in.

We are an official branch of the UNA-UK and this enables us to be able to provide guest speakers, who come to the Uni and give talks on their specific area of expertise in relations to the UN.
We run a ‘Mock’ united nations (MUN), which gives members the opportunity to understand and explore how the United Nations runs, by taking the position of a country and debating issues relevant on the global stage
We have ties with UNICEF and will be looking for members who wish to organise and participate in fundraising activities and raise awareness for UNICEF.
We are also working on an outreach programme which will look at going into local disadvantaged schools to raise awareness about the UN and what it stands for .

Video Games

Looking to achieve something this year. Basically, we have set up this society as a means to help students take a lag off work; as we understand how stressful it can get with uni work being a student. I do also believe there are lots of video game loves within the university, therefore our society will represent a hub for all game lovers or people with similar interests. Open to any advice or information / ideas. Currently running as a pound for 2matches. N.B. Fifa11/12 will be our start off point.

Volunteering in Plymouth (ViP) is a student led society that runs a variety of projects from trips to the Monkey Sanctuary and Barn Owl Trust to tea dances. The society also organizes social events for all volunteers and helps raise funds for international projects. Free to join the society and take part in projects.

Welsh Society

Chair: Rob Peduzzi-Davies

The UoP Welsh Soc came about to bring together Welsh people and others who appreciate Welsh things.
The best way, I feel, for us to get to know each other is to have a big night out during freshers and then more as and when we feel in the year.

We watch Rugby too.

And have Barbecue's.

You don't have to be from Wales to be a part of the Welsh Soc, and you don't have to speak Welsh either. This year we want to have do more social events and attract even more people to our Welsh Society. If you're interested in joining, or even want to help run the society, just ask me. Membership is £2.

Zoological

Chair: Jennifer Rizza

At the Zoological Society we organise many activities at least once a month including days out to Paignton and Newquay Zoo, The Monkey Sanctuary and Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, workshops and volunteering, also interesting talks on conservation and wildlife. If there is something, in particular, you would like a talk about then we will try and organise it. There will be some great socials too with some awesome themes! It’s £5 for the whole year, and some trips are free! If you love animals and the environment, the zoological society is for you!
